Missouri Truck Accident Statistics

  • In 2006, in the state of Missouri there were a total of 4,289 truck crashes, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's accident report by state. Of these crashes, 155 were fatal and 2,309 involved major injuries.
  • Nationally, the number of registered large trucks in the United States has increased from about 5 million in 1975 to about 9 million in 2006.
  • Fatalities in crashes involving large trucks made up 12 percent of all deaths in motor vehicle crashes in 2006
  • Injuries in large truck crashes made up 4 percent of all injuries in 2006 auto accidents.
  • Of the 4,695 drivers of large trucks involved in fatal crashes, about 6 percent were 25 years old or younger; 3 percent were 66 years or older. In comparison 30 percent of passenger vehicle drivers were 25 years of age or younger and 11 percent were 66 years or older.
  • One or more driver-related factors were recorded for 72 percent of the drivers of large trucks involved in single-vehicle fatal crashes, but only for 28 percent of the drivers of large trucks involved in multiple vehicle fatal crashes.
  • Of the 4,695 drivers of large trucks involved in fatal crashes, about 14 percent were not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash; of those, 25 percent were completely or partially ejected from the vehicle.
  • Of the trucks with out-of-service violations, more than one-third of them have problems with brakes.
  • About 30 percent of large truck drivers involved in fatal crashes have at least one prior conviction for speeding, compared to slightly less than 20 percent of the passenger vehicle drivers in fatal crashes.
  • Truck safety is not improving in the United States. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) data for 2005, 5,226 people were killed in crashes involving large trucks, the third year in a row that big truck crash deaths continued to rise. About one of every eight traffic crash fatalities each year involved a big truck.
